Upper Clatford Women’s Institute

Upper Clatford WI is a lively, friendly group of women who live in or around the village of Upper Clatford or in Andover. We offer friendship and companionship, together with the opportunity to learn new skills, listen to a range of interesting and informative speakers, visit new places, or re-visit old favourite ones!  We meet at 7.30pm every third Wednesday of the month at the Village Hall in Upper Clatford

Each month we have a different speaker or hold a social event for our members at our Wednesday meetings.  In the past 12 months  we have listened to a diverse selection  of topics which have given us insight into the working of several small but needed International and local Charities  - such as –“ The Mercy Ships” (a charity which treats people around the world), and The Wessex “ Blood bikers” (again, all volunteers who ensure the smooth transport of blood & organ products)., We were astounded by the story of a  Paralympian, Peter Hull MBE, who spoke movingly about being born quadriplegic, and took great interest in our speakers who through their enthusiasm for shared their love of  the  history of  Hampshire with  themed overviews of  “Harlots & Dung” – a hilarious and affectionate look back at Portsmouth Docks,  “Living with Jane Austen”, an interesting talk on the author, and,  “Whitchurch Silk Mill”, a very informative look at this local piece of history.  Finally, a very funny hour has been spent listening to the life of “Joyce Grenfell”, by a very affectionate talk from a lifelong fan.  This is just a snapshot of some of the very interesting speakers we have had in the last few months.

As well as regular monthly meetings, we have various “spin off” groups where everyone is welcome.  We have monthly lunches at local venues; a very popular Book Club; a thriving Theatre group whereby we organise trips to Theatres for shows as diverse as Opera to Comedy, a small but active walking groups – husbands/partners welcome.  Another of our regular groups is the very funny and popular Drama group, whereby a very brave group of ladies put on little “shows” for our entertainment – more players and members are always welcome!   Our Craft group is also a regular feature, meeting every other Thursday, we have learnt new skills from paper folding to feltwork with much more in between. Here we make items to sell for our Mince Pie Christmas coffee morning, our August Cream Tea afternoon, as well as regularly making items for local Community projects from the Hospital and Hospice in Andover to the Breast Care Cancer Units Basingstoke and Winchester.   We have held workshops in the village hall including Pottery, Glass painting, felting & embroidery.  We start 2019 with a Mosaic workshop which we are all looking forward too.   We have some fantastic bakers in our group, so we always call on them for our meetings, and events and we always like to help out at the Village May Fayre with our ever-popular Tea & Cake Tent!

As a Group we plan outings of interest throughout the year, from Stately Homes and gardens to Historical Dock yards. To complete this our centenary year, we shall be visiting Waddesdon Manor to visit the splendid Manor House and spend time around the Christmas Market stalls. Outings and get togethers are already planned for the beginning of 2019 with a friendly Skittles evening in February, and, in March we are having an afternoon at the Thomas Plant Auction room near Newbury, so something for everyone in the coming months!

We have our Christmas lunch booked once again at Essebourne Manor.

We would love you to join us at Upper Clatford WI where you would be sure of a very warm welcome.  For more details please contact either Liz (359319) or Maureen (394806)
