Stephen Hopkins and the Mayflower Celebrations

Preparations are well underway to commemorate Stephen Hopkins, who was christened at All Saints in Upper Clatford on 30th April 1580 and sailed to America with the Pilgrim Fathers leaving Britain in 1620.

Hopkins was no stranger to the American shores as he had visited there on a previous occasion in 1609. Unfortunately for him on that occasion his ship, the Sea Venture, was wrecked off the coast of Bermuda. It is that wreck that is generally accepted by scholars to be the original inspiration for Shakespeare to write his final play, The Tempest, between 1610 and 1611.

Upper Clatford is going to put on the Tempest!

We are to present a performance of The Tempest to mark the anniversary of The Mayflower and the involvement of Stephen Hopkins. The finished performance will be in the form of a rehearsed reading (no need to learn the lines) and will use as its base the adaptation of The Tempest created by Leon Garfield for the BBC Animated Tales series. This adaptation will run for between twenty-five and thirty minutes. You can see the film of The Tempest created for the Animated Tales series here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAZKIpWGN_Q.

Why not join the cast!

We are appealing to all members of the community in the Parish of Upper Clatford to get involved. Absolutely no previous theatrical experience is necessary as full tuition will be provided by the director, John Baxter. Your involvement in the project could be as one of the readers or with a backstage role.

The dates for the performance are during the weekend of 6th & 7th June (one night only) in collaboration with the “Mayflower” Flower Festival in All Saints Church and 13th August for the visit of a party from America comprising the descendants of Stephen Hopkins who wish to see where their ancestor was born and christened. You may wish to be involved in only one of the performances, there is no need to commit to both.
