Story of a revolutionary century, told by the airmen who lived it.

By Air Commodore Phil Wilkinson

During a period of duty in Moscow as Defence Attaché in the often-surprising Yeltsin years, Phil Wilkinson had a unique insight into Russia’s turbulent emergence from the Soviet era. Having travelled widely across the former Soviet Union alongside RAF veterans re-visiting their World War 2 operational locations, including to Murmansk and Archangel, he has helped to tell their unique story in a variety of books, magazine articles, a film and lectures to many audiences. He has also researched the other occasions when British armed forces, especially airmen, were engaged in, around, and over Russia between 1918 to the present day. His book, “Red Star and Roundel” on this century of RAF-Russia contact is due for publication later this year. An Oxford modern languages degree preceded Phil’s thirty-five years of RAF service. In addition to flying, he also had exchange appointments with French and US Air Forces, arms control policy development at SHAPE and command of the Berlin RAF station as the Wall came down.
